Our topics for the Summer Term were ‘My Neighbourhood’ and ‘A Few of My Favourite Things’.
Our first topic was ‘My Neighbourhood’. We learnt about our local area around our school and what we do in each place we go to. We looked at the local street map to see how we walk to places such as the local park and the local primary school we visit. We built models or our school and the local shops we visit, in art and DT. We also painted a large map and glued our houses on the map. We also built models of the houses of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We used these in our Literacy lessons to re-tell the story.
Our second topic was ‘A Few of My Favourite Things’. In this topic we learnt about what we liked and disliked, what our friends liked and disliked. We also learnt that everybody can choose their own favourite things and that everybody is different. We discovered that we all liked one particular book called ‘The Gruffalo’. We all worked very hard to learn both the story and the song off by heart so that we could put on an end of year show for our friends and family. We put our show on on the last day of school. We had lots of people watching us. We all had our faces painted like ‘The Gruffalo’ and we all look fantastic. We worked hard and all our friends and family liked our performance.

Our topics for the Spring Term were ‘Minibeasts’ and ‘Growing’.
Our first topic was ‘Minibeasts’. We learnt about lots of Minibeasts and how they live and grow. The Minibeasts we looked at were spiders, worms, caterpillars and butterflies, frogs, slugs, snails and even chickens. We got fifteen very small caterpillars in school and we watched them grow from very small caterpillars into big fat caterpillars. They went from big fat caterpillars into chrysalis. We would count how many caterpillars had changed and worked out how many more needed to change. We looked at our chrysalis every day and watched to see what would happen next. We got very excited to see them hatch out as butterflies. We learnt how to look after the butterflies and to be gentle. We kept them for three days and let them go in our garden.
We also got ten chicken eggs at school. They were kept in an incubator, this keeps them warm so they hatch. After a few days one of the eggs got a crack in it and when we got to school the next day we had one chick and nine eggs. We used the eggs and chicks for our numeracy lessons about ‘more’ and ‘less’. By the end of the week we had ten chickens. We took turns to clean, feed and water the chickens. We were allowed to hold the chickens and cuddle them each day. They were very soft and noisy. We learnt about being gentle and caring, taking turns and sharing. We were sad to say ‘Good bye’ to our chickens when they left to go to their new home.
The second topic was ‘Growing’. In this topic we planted seeds in our three big planters and took turns to water them every day. We learnt about big and small, tall and short and what plants, animals and people need to live and grow. We planted vegetables, such as carrots, beans, peas, beetroot and lettuces. We measured the plants as they grew to see who had the shortest and the tallest plants. We planted seeds in pots to taken home to our families. We painted and labelled a large tree in art and made egg shell planters in DT. When our vegetables had grown we were able to pick the vegetables and take them home to share with our families. They were yummy.
